Joanne Ehret

I am an artist using watercolor, acrylics, graphite, ink, collage, stone and clay to reflect my love of nature and fascination with the human psyche, express my emotions through abstraction, and speak my heart on issues of social justice for animals and people.

By trade, I have been a practitioner of Chinese Medicine for 35 years in western Massachusetts. Since 2000, I have also been immersed in art. I began painting after studying with watercolor teacher Ann Lindsay, who encouraged pure play with color. Brooke Schnabel's guidance instilled in me a love for painting and drawing the figure. Judith Abraham offered me her great skills in classical figure sculpture. Mel Stabin, Susan Halls and Gerald Brommer have been inspiring influences. I owe thanks to the ongoing camaraderie of the Amherst College life drawing sessions.

I make art to explore my connection to the mystery of form, color, and life, for my own joy and pleasure. A work may come from a fantasy, grief, pain, or awe. Sometimes I wonder where a work comes from, how it emerged. Each work teaches me and I respect each one. I would like to share them with you.

The dancer Martha Graham said to Agnes deMille:

"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.
And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine
how good it is,
nor how valuable it is,
nor how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it your clearly and directly, to deep the channel open..."

All abstract paintings and collages are on 140 pound or 300 pound watercolor paper or yupo paper.
